Koya Community Government School
This is the only government school is the Koya Community. Kids find it very hectic to come up to the school to learn because the means of transportation is very poor and there is no good road. The school serves classes from 1-6 primary school and JSS 3- SSS3 for junior and senior level of education. The school plays a developmental role for the people of Koya. Without this school I am afraid that it would be difficulty for kids to learn. Yet, the school still faces many challenges.
The Children with Education Before and After the War in Sierra Leone
Life before the war... In the early days of our beloved country Sierra Leone, learning was so impressive that Freetown won itself a much respected title as the "Anthems of West Africa." According to 1860 census, which shows 22% of the colony was educated. This is better than Russia at 16% and England at 13%. These results were established by the zeal of missionary’s societies. Enthusiasm was shown by the Krio family's actions to take the advantage of new opportunities for their children.
Life During the war………Sierra Leone experienced a brutal and a nasty war that engulfed all regions of the country and all sections of the population. More than 4500 children were drawn into the war as spies, porters, sex slaves, carriers and combatant for the Revolution United Front [RUF], the National Army and the civil defense force [CDF]. The country experienced unprecedented violence, destruction and untold human suffering. Close to fifty thousand [50,000] people were killed or maimed in the process and other three hundred thousand [300,000] persons were initially displaced. The paradox of the brutal war was that children were it most vulnerable victims as well as some of it most vicious persecutors. These three military groups used children who were 15 years and younger in combat and in support roles for their war effort. They fed drugs to their underage combatants, encouraged them to commit atrocities and deployed them in dangerous front line positions.
After the war ended in 2002, there were thousands of children who found themselves totally displaced along the streets of Freetown. 85% where orphans and 15% where single parents. Some managed to enrolled themselves in school by the small income their earnings brought by begging, carrying loads for traders, and the sex trade. Most children would like to attend school, but sadly, most cannot afford to attend and drop out of school. Education is important for all children in the world. This is why the success of the children Foundation Of technology school is so important.
Today, the current adult literacy rate in Sierra Leone is 31% which is one of the lowest in the world, according to the genre divided marked; only 18% of women can read English. Education is officially free for Government primary schools children, however completion rate pale in comparison and the system lack teachers.
Government primary education in Sierra Leone might be free but numerous additional costs exist and act as a disincentive and this range from legitimate expense for uniform books and stationeries. Despite progress in primary enrollment only 30% of Children carry on secondary and not all chiefdom have secondary school to meets the needs of children desiring to continue at that level.
